During the COVID-19 pandemic, I embarked upon a youth participatory action research (YPAR) study with three Black girls who had experienced overdiscipline at their respective high schools, resulting in expulsion for all three. One girl, Indigo, chose to question her former high school’s code of conduct, which had set the stage for the harm caused to her - and ultimately caused her pushout from school. This case study shares some of the stories, thoughts, and questions these three Black girls had as they discussed school discipline and how it continues to affect their lives. It also details Indigo’s findings, which were presented to her local school district in May 2021.
