Money, Power, Respect: The True Influences on University Governance

Abstract

Both the process and structure for governance include several “shadow actors” not traditionally recognized in shared governance. The purpose of the study is to provide a contemporary lens into the power and positional dynamics of higher education governance by critically examining three influential factors- money, power, and respect. The authors offer a challenge to unsettle the typical borders of higher education governance to imagine the possibilities of decision making that centers access, diversity, inclusion, and equity. To elicit better and different outcomes for marginalized populations in particular, the academy as a whole must unsettle the confines that have myopically shaped the way higher education is governed.
