Career Readiness: Mathematical Demands of Careers as Reported by Early Career Professionals

Abstract

College and career readiness definitions typically articulate the need for students to engage in challenging coursework to prepare them for the demands of postsecondary study and work. The Quantile Career Database provides summary information on mathematics demands of training and early career materials for over 400 careers. This research uses survey methodology to identify the mathematics demands of 30 representative careers by comparing the lived experiences of young professionals to the mathematical demands previously identified in the Quantile Career Database. Results show that alignment between mathematics demands of training and career materials and professional experience vary depending on criteria such as the number of skills and concepts identified and career characteristics.
