Understanding the Barriers and Supports for Students of Color in Graduate Counseling Education

Abstract

Graduate counseling programs do not always adequately address issues of racism and support for their students of color. The barriers experienced by students of color in graduate counseling education likely contribute to poor retention outcomes, sense of belonging and academic success for graduate level students of color. The qualitative study collected data sources to include interviews and observational data and were transcribed and coded for themes to better understand faculty perceptions of perceived experiences in supporting student of color in graduate counseling education. Implications can inform factors which influence the successes and challenges in supporting students of color and potential practices for faculty and administrators to consider in graduate counseling programs.
