Abstract

There is a long history of abuses conducted against communities of color on the basis of science and in complicity with white supremacy and state interests. Increasingly there has a been a call for decolonizing and culturally responsive research methodologies. Drawing on Marxist-humanist and Freirian epistemologies, and sharing stories from two decades of ethnographic and narrative research, I offer insights toward developing a critical humanist research praxis. Story themes include the researcher's privilege, Being where you shouldn't be, and epistemological encounters.
