Sun, April 24, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Equity in education demands the participation of more scholars of racially diverse backgrounds. The training of these scholars requires new perspectives and approaches. Using transformative learning framework, we explored experiences and skills necessary to support novice scholars to successfully publish their work in academic journals. Documents produced by nine doctoral students during a 15-week-long semester course were analyzed. The findings showed that doctoral students successfully develop their competence to critically write their manuscript. They also constructively increased growth to their peers through reflective and constructive feedback. Our research provides significance for other institutions and instructors in designing courses to develop novice scholars into prolific writers and contributors of new knowledge.
