Abstract

This critical qualitative study explores five preservice secondary social studies teachers (PSSTs) working in an urban teacher preparation program amidst historic and traumatic national and local events taking place during the 2020-2021 school year (hereafter “2020 events”). 2020 events presented unique challenges for participants as they attempted to figure the world of teaching and learning social studies and author humanizing teacher identities. However, findings indicate methods of humanizing social studies teacher education pedagogy helped leverage 2020 events in ways supporting PSSTs in the processes of humanizing teacher identity formation.
