Documenting Implementation of a Model Supporting Students With Disabilities: The Exceptional Student Education Curriculum Project

Abstract

Despite emphasis on supporting all students using evidence-based instructional practices, students with disabilities often lack access to quality instruction. A large urban district in the Southeastern U.S. seeks to prepare 13 elementary schools to implement an evidenced-based curriculum model for all Exceptional Student Education students. This paper describes a pilot study to inform a rigorous impact study including: (1) the collaborative development of the logic model and fidelity measures; (2) preliminary results from efforts to develop a matched comparison sample; and (3) results from a pilot study that suggest the program is positively related to student academic and behavioral outcomes. Authors share lessons learned and study tools that may support researchers who wish to design and implement similar studies.
