Critical Reflections of Dharmic* Scholar-Practitioners on Supporting Dharmic* Students in Higher Education

Abstract

This paper discusses the lack of attention to students from the dharmic* traditions (Sikhs, Jains, Hindus, and Buddhists) in higher education, even in discourse about religious identity/diversity. It shares the outcomes of one year’s worth of conversations among a group of scholar-practitioners from the dharmic* traditions, where we ask and attempt to answer the question, “what shifts in research and practice would enable us to address the issues and concerns facing these students?” While we do not position ourselves as having definitive and universal answers to this difficult question, we describe our collective attempt to provide nuanced, experientially informed, and theoretically grounded ideas and concerns with the goal of inspiring further and deeper conversation among our colleagues in the field.
