"We Keep Us Safe": A Critical Analysis of Student of Color Resistance to Campus Policing

Abstract

This critical case study examines racialized practices in campus policing at the University of Michigan (U-M). Through group and individual interviews, we explore how student of color activists make meaning of their experiences with campus police and how they envision the future of campus safety. Moreover, this project interrogates the rhetoric of campus leaders regarding issues of policing and campus safety in conjunction with how student of color activists perceive and work to address safety issues using discourse analysis. Grounded in the experiences and labor of the Student of Color Liberation Front (SoC LF)—a coalition of racial/ethnic justice and immigration advocacy student organizations—we center their organizing efforts to cultivate a safer campus environment for marginalized students at U-M.
