A Feasibility Study on a Digital Citizenship Curriculum: Navigating the Constraints of COVID-19

Abstract

We studied the feasibility of an innovative blended learning curriculum for early adolescents intended to foster citizenship skills through collaborative dialogue. Our curriculum was implemented during the 2020-2021 academic year, which afforded an opportunity to study feasibility under constrained classroom contexts. We conducted qualitative analysis on data collected from teachers and students through interviews and focus groups. Results indicate acceptance of our curriculum, but also suggest issues with practicality and demand. Collaborative dialogue is cognitively, socially, and emotionally demanding for students. Blended formats for dialogue increased the use of technological tools, which posed efficacy and usability challenges, particularly in classrooms serving a greater percentage of children from low-income families. Suggestions for future directions are discussed.
