Scenario Planning as Curriculum: An Imaginative Rhizomatic Learning Curriculum

Abstract

Equitable education requires a curriculum that sees as worthy the stories of all students, however dominant discourses continue to standardize the stories told. This conceptual paper proposes a type of curriculum based on scenario planning. By analyzing the intersection of curriculum reconceptualization and a post-structural approach to scenario planning methodology, a scenario planning curriculum is seen as a course to run which engages students in layered readings of the past in order to imaginatively create alternative future stories. The curriculum positions students as both readers and storytellers of a world seen in terms of multiplicities. Such a curriculum becomes significant as it moves beyond earlier conceptualizations based on developmentalism, moving towards rhizomatic learning that values understanding of self and other.
