Self-Belonging and Self-Efficacy While Teaching and Learning in 2020: Impact of COVID-19's Social Distancing on Education

Tue, April 26, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), AERA Virtual Poster Rooms, AERA Virtual Poster Room 1

Abstract

This presentation examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on teachers and learners’ sense of belonging during their course teaching and course taking. Teachers and learners from all academic levels who engaged in remote learning experience certain levels of belonging to the space of learning, which is linked to their level of success. The lenses adopted revolve around the sense of belonging, self-efficacy, and the nature of distance education. A mixed-methods approach was used to analyze the results of a survey instrument that asks teachers and learners about their educational experiences during the Covid-19 period. Results include factors that facilitate the delivery of instruction and an increase in success, which, in turn, increase our chances of creating equitable societal systems.
