Research findings have shown that school misbehavior lowered academic achievement and increased delinquent behavior for all students. While the existence of disciplinary disparities is well documented, less is known about whether teacher characteristics systematically influence these disparities. Our study addresses this gap in the research by exploring how teacher backgrounds characteristics potentially influence perceptions about the behaviors of students. Using olS regression, we asked how do teacher background characteristics such as type of training, years in teaching and race, correlate with a tendency to rate students’ behaviors as defiance?
In our analysis, we found that teachers with more years of teaching experience are associated with rating students as being less defiant when all other variables are held constant.
