Where Are We From? Drawing on "Peoplehood" to Humanize Higher Education

Abstract

Over the 2020-21 academic year, an anti-racist faculty working group aimed to interrupt racist policies and practices by building relationships within our university department. We used critical action research to structure our action and inquiry methods. We led 30 to 60 minute sessions at five synchronous online department meetings. Together with our 26 departmental colleagues, we explored our identities, origins, and curriculum from the Indigenous lenses of Critical Indigenous Research Methodologies (CIRM) and Peoplehood. In this proposal, we describe these activities and analyze how CIRM and Peoplehood guided each activity. Continuing to humanize, build and maintain relationships is critical to this on-going work.
