Beyond Boxes and Arrows: Uses of Procedural Diagrams in Mixed-Methods Research

Abstract

This paper discusses the current state of procedural diagrams, i.e., flowcharts used to communicate design features, in mixed methods research. This paper draws upon the nascent literature describing how a researcher creates such a diagram and examines how these diagrams manifested in example publications in the Journal of Mixed Methods Research – where empirical studies are compelled to have one. The premise of this paper is to propose how procedural diagrams can advance beyond outlining the timing and sequencing of methodological techniques to be used as evidence for myriad arguments like defending a study’s alignment with research questions or a framework, its emphasis on integration, or its contribution to the methodological literature.
