Refugee Resettlement in Canada: Addressing Inequalities and Injustice Through Educational Partnerships and Community Engagement

Abstract

The response to settle refugees in Canada has had a profound effect on communities, schools, and social service agencies. For many refugee children, the school is not a welcoming environment nor a source of stability and security. This paper is derived from a mixed-methods research program entitled, “Determinants for Mental Well-Being of Refugees: Considerations for Economic and Social Integration.” The research spanned from April 2017 - October 2018 and was designed to help organizational stakeholders and school leaders better understand the inequalities and injustices for refugees and to find ways to collaborate and connect with each other to find new approaches to supporting refugee students and creating a more equitable system to foster adjustment in Canada.
