Meaningful Engagement for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Families Through STEM Events

Abstract

Family engagement is critical to a child’s education, but often trails testing and the day-to-day workings of the classroom. There is ample literature that points to the value of engaging families in their children’s educational experiences. Gamoran, Lopez-Turley, Turner, & Fish (2012) reported that Latinx parents often felt less comfortable approaching teachers with questions than White parents. Comparatively, they found these same parents were more likely to connect with other parents at the school to create stronger social networks. This paper reports on efforts to support families of emergent bilinguals through family engagement events focused on STEMSS (STEM + social studies) activities. Surveys from parent participants were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods. Implications and recommendations for professional development are shared.
