The Study of Jigsaw Pedagogy to Promote Engagement for PhD International Students' Learning in Taiwan

Abstract

This study explored nine Ph.D. international students who come from Indonesia, Thai and USA, took the EMI course of Methodologies of Educational Research in 2020 spring semester, Taiwan. Jigsaw pedagogy action research was implemented to promote their affective and academic engagement. Weekly self-report and focus group interviews data were collected and analyzed. The results showed jigsaw cooperative learning in this course seemed to promote both affective and academic engagements of these Ph.D. international students. Participants mostly reflected positive emotions and partly negative emotions which can be interpreted through language barrier, peer discussion, and discussion moderation. Participants exerting time and effort in the learning tasks and actively trying to meet and even exceed the requirement of the cooperative learning tasks.
