Abstract

Roma (Gypsies) women face multiple discrimination: as women, as Roma, and very often as poor and undereducated because the consequences, worldwide, of inequitable education systems. So, when they are victims of sexism, gender violence, sexual harassment and/or assault, consequences are more likely to be worst. Roma feminism and scholarship point out that Roma women equality should be promoted jointly by men and women. In this sense, this paper collects the first research funded by the Spanish Government especially focused on the role of Roma men to promote Roma women equality. Results shows that New Alternative Masculinities (NAM) and the access to equitable educational systems are crucial to ensure Roma women equality and freedom, and particularly important to prevent gender violence.
