Do You Mind the Culture Gap? Intercultural Development During Graduate Program in Design Education

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore how Korean international students are struggling learning and teaching in a different culture, and how U.S. educators focusing on culturally relevant pedagogy in design education programs can improve graduate education and better prepare intercultural post-secondary instructors. Arts-based research (ABR) methods used rendering participants’ voice with poetry. As a result, 1) To advance design education, students with diverse funds of knowledge and lived experiences who struggled with flatten curriculum need to learn diverse design approaches; 2) Diverse lived experiences influence creative thinking, learning, and teaching in design education; and 3) Design educators should encourage students to learn about cultural diversity and why conducting community-based participatory design research with students can be life changing.
