The Impact of Insufficient Effort Responding on Test Validity and Reliability

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discuss the effect of the insufficient effort responding (IER) on test validity and reliability by applying various methods for detecting IER. We also explore how the proportion of subjects classified as IER varies according to the detection methods and how the effectiveness of each method improves test validity and reliability estimation using an exploratory factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha. For data, the background survey for 8th graders in TIMSS 2019 was used. Considering suitability, IER was detected by long string, mahalanobis distance, inter-item standard deviation, and L_z^p statistic methods.
