Participatory Action Research Activating a College Attainment Network: Lessons Learned for Schools and Communities

Abstract

College attainment reduces poverty and produces better health and employment outcomes. This two-year participatory action research project utilizing photovoice and Q methodology developed a college attainment network in the Mississippi Delta. The project engaged high school students, college students, community volunteers and the Mayor’s Office in Greenville, MS in the design and establishment of citywide sites providing assistance with college paperwork. Through photovoice and Q methodology participants identified barriers to getting college information outside of the high school context and elaborated on the difficulty with college paperwork most notably financial aid applications. Participants recommended citywide college attainment sites to ensure access for all. Findings include design principles for school community outreach in high poverty contexts to cultivate greater equity.
