Resilience as an Argument for Reform: Analyzing the Perspectives of Doctoral Students

Abstract

This paper develops the concept of resilience and its meaning within the context of support resources and networks for doctoral students. While research into student support is abundant in discussions of undergraduate students, less focus is given to doctoral students, even in the face of comparable dropout rates given the particular challenges that both groups of students encounter. This paper presents an interview study that explores doctoral students’ perspectives about challenges in their studies and support that they receive to negotiate the expectations of their degree programs. Analysis of the interview data holds implications for policymakers in that explicitly expressed instances of resilience among students should also be examined for future opportunities in providing support.
