Profiling Beginning Teachers' Intrinsic Orientation and Effective Teaching Behavior: Latent Profile and Transition Analyses

Abstract

Acknowledging the significance of teachers’ intrinsic orientations for the quality and professional development of teachers, a compound teacher trait — teacher’s intrinsic orientation for the profession (TIOP) instrument was constructed and validated using a variable-centered approach. In order to better understand TIOP, this study adopted a person-centered approach to unravel the latent profiles of Dutch beginning teachers’ TIOP and effective teaching. 284 teachers voluntarily participated in the survey and classroom observation at three waves. The results of Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) and Latent Transition Analysis (LTA) identify three positive profiles (progressive/adaptive/high dynamic profiles) and three relatively disadvantageous profiles (regressing/maladaptive/low dynamic profiles). Based on the findings, induction interventions can be tailored to teachers’ needs.
