Cultivating Conocimiento and Equity: BIPOC TikTokers Resisting Colonialism

Abstract

Eurocentric, colonial narratives permeate the education system. Often these narratives include the supposed deficiencies of Black, Indigenous, People of Color, BIPOC. These colonial narratives also include narrow definitions of literacy. BIPOC can leverage alternate literacies to challenge deficiency narratives. In this study, I apply the Anzaldúan lens of conocimiento to a critical content analysis of TikToks created by BIPOC. I examine six BIPOC TikTok accounts for the way they cultivate conocimiento by creating knowledge, seeking connection, and participating in activism. Codes like preserving traditions, community, and resistance pervade the data. Educators who privilege alternate literacies and alternate narratives can empower students to cultivate conocimiento and create a more equitable future.
