Community-Engaged Pedagogy for Equitable Hispanic-Serving Institution Teacher Preparation: Bridging Community, School, and University Cultures

Abstract

Transforming teacher preparation in a shifting US demographic landscape entails a complex, integrated set of initiatives. This interactive conference presentation will discuss an in-depth, collaborative research project engaging Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) teacher educators, experienced and novice teachers, school administrators, community activists, and teacher candidates to generate a practice-based community engaged pedagogy framework. This initiative bridges community, school, and university cultures, and is critical to building a sustainable, equitable approach to teacher preparation transformation, both in borderlands US contexts and beyond. Ultimately, such community-embedded approach is able to transform teacher candidates’ thinking about the effects of teaching and learning in Latinx students’ lives, how social factors influence scholastic achievement, and how students’ cultural and linguistic experiences can nurture academic success.
