World and Self: Harnessing Oppositional and Global Consciousness in a Human-Centered and Digitally Mediated Learning Environment

Abstract

This study analyzes how high school-aged girls in Japan develop a sense of oppositional and global consciousness in an online human-centered workshop. The objective of this paper is to understand the process by which learners address persisting inequalities through identification of inequalities, critical reflection, and critical action. Using interaction analysis, we analyze how a group of five learners make sense of social issues and inequalities around them as they engage in reflexive learning. This study is relevant because it explains the mechanisms by which youths become more aware of social injustice, propelling them to become activists of social change.
