This study explored how scientists and their work were represented in an American high school chemistry textbook. An analytical framework encompassing background, work-related issues, scientists’ achievement, and educational values of their achievement, was constructed to analyze the textbook. The results showed that most scientists in the textbook were depicted as male, European, and working alone in a supportive social environment. Nearly half of the scientists were motivated by improving existing theories and did empirical research to create new substances or techniques. Furthermore, this textbook provided multiple perspectives when evaluating scientists’ achievement, whereas it emphasized advocating scientists’ scientific attitudes but nearly paid no attention to social responsibility.
