Shaking the Walls of the House: The Emotionality of Justice Work in Teacher Education

Abstract

“To work as a feminist means trying to transform the organisations that employ us – or house us… When we try to shake the walls of the house, we are also shaking the foundations of our own existence” (Ahmed, 2016). We, white women teacher educators, consider the limitations of (white) institutional authority to create impact beyond institutions: the paradox of being a part of institutions as we simultaneously (aim to) act to depart from them. This study, a critical collaborative inquiry, examines experiences working within, against, and beyond our institutions to realize our abolitionist ethical-political commitments. We suggest the significance of collective inquiry for better understanding how to shake the walls of the house, and thus, our very existence.
