This study focuses on the existing empirical research on transfer in vocational education and training (VET), analyzing the impact and the evidential quality of the research results of these studies, their significance and their claim to validity. We present first results from a critical two-fold analysis of the current relevant literature. After conducting a comprehensive and well-structured review of the existing literature, we identified 30 empirical studies and analyzed them in more depth, following a research pyramid model and an established framework for assessing the quality of qualitative research. By identifying the strengths and shortcomings of the existing empirical research on transfer in VET, we are able to point out research desiderata and derive recommendations for future evidence-based research.
