Promoting Equity in Remote Postsecondary Career and Technical Educational Settings

Abstract

Career and technical education (CTE) in community colleges is a vital strategy for rebuilding America’s middle-class through training skilled workers for well-paying careers. COVID-19 has necessitated more online education, and because of the hands-on nature of CTE, unique difficulties arise. Remote learning can negatively affect the future success of CTE students, which makes it vital to not only thoroughly understand this shift but particularly for underrepresented groups that are disproportionally impacted by remote learning. Here we synthesize the literature on remote CTE learning, make suggestions for improving equity through access and digital literacy, and propose a survey to elicit data on explicit changes that were beneficial for learning during the pandemic and to promote equity in the future.
