This study explored the effects of the common types of seductive details and relational data representations, as well as topic beliefs on data visualization comprehension and learners’ cognitive load as they analyzed data visualizations synthesizing COVID-19 trends. Relative data representations (percent change) increased undergraduate students’ response times and hindered comprehension. COVID-19 beliefs did not influence either response times or comprehension accuracy. Interestingly, participants spent more time comprehending plain data visualizations compared to visualizations with either topic relevant or non-relevant seductive details. These findings have important implications for research and practice as the society is grappling with comprehending larger and more complex data using new and emerging data visualizations.
