This case study addressed the impact of international student teaching on U.S. teacher candidates’ future imaginaries of schooling. For some, immersion in different cultures of schooling generated limited critiques of current neoliberal educational policy and practice and the emergence of future imaginaries wherein schools were places of freedom and joy for students and teachers. However, while the international experience led to self-affirmation for ISTs, there was little critical self-problematization. Authors discuss how the development of new future imaginaries and re-imagined teaching practices can be supported.
