Complexities of Practitioner Research: Seeking Hallmarks of Quality

The emphasis on professional knowledge and practical research means that methodological training in Ed.D. programs must prepare candidates for career demands they will encounter; practitioner research (PR) is well-suited to this task. Yet, questions about rigor and quality in PR are prevalent making it difficult to accomplish this goal. Guided by the literature, this study establishes hallmarks for quality and applies them to publications of PR. The findings extend the discourse on PR, initiating a discussion using common language for evaluating such inquiries and understanding the contribution to knowledge generation about teaching and learning. These hallmarks can be used in Ed.D. programs to prepare candidates to design and implement their own rigorous practitioner research which generates useful and relevant knowledge.
