Abstract

Stage’s (2007) editorial is credited with introducing the terms Critical Quantitative (CritQuant)and Quantitative Criticalism (QuantCrit) as frames of reference for education scholars who
challenge quantitative research framed within the positivist tradition. As education scholars brought in the critical underpinnings of interdisciplinary scholarship into Critical Quantitative
and Quantitative Criticalism work, instances of conflation between both approaches began to surface within the existing literature. The purpose of our systematic literature review is to provide greater conceptual and methodological clarity on the contributions of both areas within education research. We highlight the contributions of scholars who advanced CritQuant and QuantCrit approaches between 2007 to 2021. We share the strengths and limitations of both approaches and discuss future directions of the field.
