Learning How to See Social Emotional Learning in Youth Arts Practice

Abstract

This paper explores how to observe and recognize social emotional learning (SEL) experiences and development in the context of youth arts practice. We aim to understand: (1) What does SEL look like as young people engage in arts practices? (2) How do we develop a tool that allows us to observe and measure SEL in youth arts practice? Specifically, we focus on connection as a construct of SEL-in-action. We aim to both establish the mechanisms within art-making that engage young people in SEL and to develop a mechanism for documenting SEL in situ. This will be particularly useful for arts researchers and practitioners who know that SEL is happening but struggle to identify how arts practices support young people.
