Transforming Students' Attitudes Through Dialogic Literary Gatherings: A Case Study Within Basque Minority Language

Abstract

Over the last decades, many efforts have been made to establish the Basque minority language as a normalized language in the Basque Country (Spain). Despite being the main language of instruction, many students still have negative attitudes and limited proficiency in the language. Based on previous research, this qualitative study would explore the extent to which the implementation of a particular dialogue-based classroom strategy named Dialogic Literary Gatherings (DLGs), may transform secondary students’ attitudes towards Basque (L2). The DLGs were carried out with 46 students, and two teachers’ interviews and two students’ focus groups were conducted after their implementation. The results drawn from the inductive analysis show that DLGs provided students with a dialogical space which helped changing their attitudes.
