Abstract

We contribute to the development of scholarly literature on teaching and learning through a critical analysis of research on teaching practices, and their relationship to theories of learning, in a specific subject matter domain: research methods pedagogy. This analysis of teaching/learning research in research methods pedagogy demonstrates the need for more nuanced examination of the iterative relationships, actual (enacted) curricula, and the multiple embedded contexts of classroom encounters. In this specific subject domain—the teaching of research methods—existing scholarship tends towards a procedural focus with ostensible implications for teaching practice. Using an integrated conceptualization of teaching/learning demonstrates a need for additional research in teaching/learning in higher education, both domain-specific, and generally; this research can promote equitable teaching practices
