Abstract

Our project aims to promote students’ computational thinking (CT) skills using meteorology as a context, and IDV (Integrated Data Viewer: https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/idv/) as a tool to visualize real-world weather data. Unfortunately, existing studies do not reflect how CT skills are practiced by meteorologists, but rather base their list of CT skills only on competencies rooted in computer science coursework. In this paper, we present a list of CT skills contextualized in data visualization of meteorology based on a review of the literature. In addition, we give examples of how we embedded these skills into the visualization of weather data using IDV.
