Abstract

What makes a difference in teacher innovativeness? From the TALIS 2018 US teacher data, we identified two outcomes: individual innovativeness and team innovativeness. We also identified six groups of potential factors: (1) innovation-related preparedness, (2) innovation-related professional development, (3) professional practices, (4) classroom autonomy, (5) school decision participation, and (6) innovation-related teacher self-efficacy. By applying a structural equation model with mediation, we found that all factors matter but they matter in different ways. We found only a direct effect on team innovativeness of four factors, while all factors presented either direct or indirect effects on individual innovativeness, with the two largest direct effects from teacher self-efficacy with helping students think critically and professional practice—team teaching and peer observation.
