Exploring the Forces Shaping the Implementation of an Integrated Mathematics and Computer Science Curriculum

Abstract

Computer science (CS) skills are so critical currently that states have instituted policies impacting CS education in schools. Schools now need teachers who have SC knowledge and experience. We examined teachers’ implementation of integrated CS and mathematics curricula, attending to time allotted, fidelity to the module, allowance of productive struggle, extent of integration, and amount of productive talk. In this analysis, the authors found three spheres of influence relating to teachers’ implementation: Beliefs about Teaching and Learning Mathematics, School and Classroom Context, and Teacher Prior Experiences that Influenced Implementation. We found that the Beliefs about Teaching and Learning sphere related most to teachers’ implementation. This research shows that teachers’ beliefs are just as important as the design of curricula.
