Abstract

Hip-hop education research is young but remains influential within the field of education and beyond. Unfortunately, due to negative perspectives of hip-hop music and culture the uptake of hip-hop education in mainstream education remains a challenge. Using data from the Web of Science, we conducted a citation, co-citation, and social network analysis of 280 hip-hop education related documents. Our results indicate that hip-hop education scholarship was cited nearly 3,000 times during its relatively short history and is heavily cited in non-educational disciplines such as music, social science, as well as public, environmental, and occupational health. Notable scholarly documents are identified and characterized within hip-hop education. Our study provides evidence of the impact, structure, and connectedness of hip-hop education scholarship.
