STEM Teachers' Technology Integration Practices: A University-School Partnership

Abstract

Technology integration is a challenge for teachers, and previous research has pointed to several internal and external barriers to classroom technology integration. Through a University-School partnership, Research Experience for Teachers (RET) professional development program, teachers were immersed in learning about computer hardware and software used in cybersecurity. They were then asked to transfer their research experience into lessons for secondary and community college level students. The current study uses a convergent mixed-methods design to examine changes in teacher perceptions of barriers to technology use as a result of teacher participation in the technology-rich RET PD using longitudinal data. Findings reveal that teachers’ perceptions depend on their individual preferences, prior knowledge and background. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.
