Across California Native Landscapes: Responsibility Imbued Ethnic Studies Curriculum

Abstract

This study aims to disrupt the stark divisions between educational theory and practice with the social transformation process of Honoring Native Landscapes. Through relational accountability with local tribes, and using Indigenous pedagogies, faculty critical reflexivity, and student learning as agents of social transformation, Across California Native Landscapes (ACNL) research service learning projects come alive in the community. ACNL was created by three faculty at two public universities, each implementing the projects in American Indian/Native American Studies and Ethnic Studies Education courses. Consistent meetings between the faculty allowed for check-ins on lived experiences of faculty and critical reflexivities about the implementation and responses of students engaging in the semester-long projects. The next cohort of students will continue this liberatory work.
