This paper offers a critical examination of the methodological assumptions from Critical Participatory Action Research that studies how LGBTQ+ educators work for social transformation in PK-12 systems. As co-researchers who self-identify as LGBTQ+, we navigated lengthy negotiations with our IRB as we communicated our commitment to participant autonomy. Through this process, we recognized a need for synthesized methodological best practices that honor queer, nonbinary, and transgender participants (Vincent, 2018). In this paper, we (a) overview our methodological assumptions, (b) outline how these assumptions were translated into decisions, and (c) explain the critical reasoning behind each decision. We hope this roundtable will provide space to collect and synthesize methodological resources that center autonomy, liberation, and privacy for LGBTQ+ researchers and participants.
