Examining Withdrawal and Student Engagement for Student Veterans in Community Colleges

Abstract

Using three years of data from the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE), we investigated the relationship between engagement with campus support services and likelihood of withdrawing from class/campus for a national sample of student veterans (n = 17,354). Student veterans who perceived campus services as important, and utilized services more often, reported a higher likelihood of withdrawing from classes. We also investigated differences between student veterans and non-veterans in utilization of key campus services. Student veterans differed from non-veterans on most services, with use of library services (lower) and computer labs (lower) representing the largest differences (d = .14, and .13 respectively).
