From Guinea Pig Politics to Tissue Economies: Examining Science Education and STEM Discourses Through a Bloody Lens

Abstract

This paper challenges extant science education by centering the work and experiences of human subjects and tissue donors. It draws on historical studies, sociology of medicine, journalism, and writings and interviews with subjects and donors. It examines both are configured in neoliberalism as resources and as a source of labor. It uses this to produce an imaginary curricula that centers voices and history of t of tissue donors and human subjects to reassert questions of ethics and power that were barely legible in the older National Science Education Standards and are erased entirely in the newer NGSS standards.
