Methodologically Speaking: Framing Dialogue as an Afrocentric Feminist Intervention in Qualitative Research

Abstract

This paper offers an innovative approach to critical, qualitative research method and methodology that takes up intentional, reflective dialogue situated in Black women’s ways of knowing as a nuanced interdisciplinary method that is: (1) a more space-based (rather than place-based) level of inquiry, (2) a means by which qualitative inquirers can make room for the transformative dynamics of (collaborative) meaning-making and representation and, (3) a process (i.e., purposefully dialoguing about our research and research engagements) that could be considered a form of secondary data analysis. Our unpacking of how dialogue becomes a tool for advancing research has implications for both re-presenting research as well as teaching qualitative methods and critical race theory.
