Hispanics in an English-Only Versus Dual-Language Programs: Two Worlds in One School

Abstract

The present study compares two language instruction programs, Dual Language (DL) and English Only (EO), running parallel in the same school. We compared the scores and proficiency levels of 37 third-grade Hispanics New York´s 2019 statewide English Language Arts (ELA) and Math tests scores. Most students in both programs attained proficiency levels 1 and 2 for both tests. We found no difference in ELA scores between programs, but DL students had higher scores in Math. Further analysis revealed that the English as a New Language level of proficiency (ENL) is associated with both ELA and Math results. However, receiving special education services does not contribute significantly to the Math and ELA scores, once the ENL is taken into account.
